What is a dermoid cyst?
A dermoid cyst is a lump that has been there since birth, formed when skin cells get trapped under the skin. It is most often seen beside the eyebrow, on the forehead or scalp, on the neck, or along the middle of the back. It is usually not cancer.
What parents notice
- A round, smooth, painless lump under the skin.
- It grows slowly as the child grows.
- It feels firm or rubbery and may be fixed in place.
See a doctor soon if
- The lump becomes red, hot, painful or leaks pus.
- A lump along the middle of the back has a dimple or a tuft of hair on it.
Treatment
A dermoid cyst does not go away on its own. A small operation removes the whole sac; if part of the sac is left behind, it can come back. For lumps on the scalp or the back, an ultrasound or MRI may be needed first. The surgeon decides the timing after examining your child.
Common questions
Will it disappear by itself?
No. It needs a small operation to remove it.
Is it dangerous?
It is usually harmless, but it can become infected and it keeps growing, so it is better removed.
